DP Day

What is DP Day? DP Day is The Detroit Partnership's largest event, drawing almost 1,000 of students and community members each year who come to Detroit to participate in a massive day of service and learning. As you know, The DP runs many one-time and weekly projects during the year, bringing over 150 students to Detroit each week. DP Day is not only a culmination of our regular volunteers' hard work, it is also a celebration of the partnerships students have made within the Detroit community. When is DP Day this year? March 29th, 2007 How does it work? DP Day is one giant day of service and learning, incorporating over 50 volunteer sites throughout Northwest Detroit, mainly in the Brightmoor neighborhood. On DP Day volunteers congregate at 9am to take buses into Detroit. There they are dropped off at their sites and participate in work that can range from painting a mural, planting trees for a park, building a playground, to demolishing a building. Lunch is served at these sites. At the end of the day volunteers regroup at Stoepel Park in Detroit for an exciting closing ceremony where they get the chance to hear speakers from the community and reflect on their day. At 5pm students arrive back in Ann Arbor by bus. How do I get involved? DP Day annually is the largest student-run service project in the City of Detroit, and anyone can be part of it! Sign-up will commence next semester. What is a site leader? Site leaders are the glue that holds DP Day together--they act as the primary liaisons to the DP Planning Team and volunteers before DP Day. On DP Day site leaders are responsible for heading a volunteer site, while keeping their volunteers organized and energized. They facilitate discussions about the relationship between the work they are doing and the history of the social issues of the Brightmoor community and Detroit. All site leaders are required to attend three- 2 hour training sessions run by The Detroit Partnership Planning Team. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about leadership and take an especially important role in making this incredible day a success.
